MILWAUKEE - After 90 minutes of even play between Marquette (9-4-2, 3-2-2 C-USA) and Cincinnati (10-2-1, 4-0-2 C-USA), the Bearcats took advantage of a small opening late in the first overtime. Amy Simonson capitalized and scored the lone goal of the match to give Cincinnati a 1-0 win over the Golden Eagles.
In the 98th minute, midfielder Amy Mink played a ball into the corner, centering to midfielder Tasha Wagner. Wagner settled the centering pass to the far post and left it towards the center of the goal for Simonson. She then placed the ball over the hands of an outstretched MU keeper Ashleigh Koenig (Naperville, Ill.) for the lone tally.
"I thought overall that it was a good college soccer game between two good teams," said Marquette head coach Markus Roeders. "Things just didn't fall our way. We have a disappointed team and a disappointed staff. It's even tougher knowing that we played well. We put ourselves in a situation to win and we aren't being rewarded."
Marquette owned the possession in the first half, but Cincinnati had the majority of the chances in the first 45 minutes. Cincinnati had six first half shots, five on goal. Koenig made five of her six saves in the first half.
MU owned the ball and the opportunities in the second half. MU had a 5-1 shot advantage in the period and had one near goal. Junior midfielder Anne Ioder (Franklin, Wis.) put a head on a ball with four minutes left in regulation. Her shot was saved by Cincinnati keeper Tracy Hale, but she was not able to contain the ball. A second shot was smothered by Hale between her legs, thwarting the MU effort.
The Golden Eagles next play on Sunday, Oct. 20 against Louisville at Valley Fields. Match time scheduled for noon.
