GREENVILLE, N.C. - East Carolina defeated Marquette, 2-1, in women's college soccer Friday afternoon. With the win, the Golden Eagles fall to 10-5-2 overall and 4-3-2 in C-USA play. East Carolina is 9-4-3 overall and is 5-2-2 in conference play.
Marquette took a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute when junior midfielder Laura Culhane (Brookfield, Wis.) scored her second goal of the season. Freshman Julie Thompson (Naperville, Ill.) fed Culhane after pulling East Carolina goalkeeper Michelle Kimotek away from the goal.
The Pirates took the lead in the second half when defender Penny Perrott headed the ball in to the net for the game winning goal off of a corner kick from Amanda Duffy at 52:13.
East Carolina tied the match at the 40:04 mark on its first shot of the match. Krystal Pabey centered a corner kick that Duffy blasted to the corner of the net.
After the second score, Marquette opened up the attack, having a 7-4 shot advantage in the second half. However, MU could not secure the match winner. East Carolina remained undefeated at home with the win.
"We knew what sort of environment we were getting into," head coach Markus Roeders said. "We tried everything. We played three and four up front at times. We just couldn't' get it done today."
Marquette next plays on Sunday, Oct. 27, against Wis.-Milwaukee at Valley Fields at 5 p.m.
