MILWAUKEE - Marquette and Wis.-Milwaukee played to a 1-1 tie in women's college soccer at Valley Fields in Milwaukee. The Golden Eagles record stands at 10-5-3 while UWM is 7-5-5.
The Golden Eagles took the lead in the 26th minute of the match. Senior midfielder Kate Gordon headed a ball from 16 yards out past UWM keeper Mary Duffy. Gordon was fed on a long cross from 35 yards from senior defender Kristin Halley.
"What a great goal that was," head coach Markus Roeders said. "Kate Gordon's header from 16 yards out in to the side of the net was not an easy goal. We're just not getting the easy chances right now."
Marquette owned the balance of action through the first half of the second half. The MU defense did not allow the Panthers to get off a shot until midway through the second half. UWM's second shot of the match tied the contest. In the 80th minute Elizabeth Chudy launched a shot from 25 yards out that went over the hands of MU keeper Ashleigh Koenig, off the crossbar and past the goal line.
"Our defense held up and out of nowhere, there was a cross that was miscleared," Roeders said. "They had an opportune shot from 25 yards out and all of the sudden it's 1-1."
Both teams had several opportunities in the overtime. UWM had five shots in the overtime after having three in the first half. Marquette had four shots in the overtime.
Marquette next takes on Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tenn., on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.
