MILWAUKEE - Dayton, coming off a season opening loss to Saint Louis on Friday, defeated Marquette in its season opener, 80-62.
Marquette had a strong performance from junior guard Katie O'Grady (Chicago, Ill.), who scored a career high 17 points, but MU was put in a hole early by the Flyers three point shooting. Dayton hit 6-of-10 three pointers in the first half and raced out to a 20 point lead midway through the first half.
"We redefined having the first half jitters," head coach Terri Mitchell said. "One game doesn't make a season and we hope to show the team that I know we are on Tuesday (against Wis.-Milwaukee)."
Dayton's Chrissy Donovan hit three of six three pointers in the first half, scoring 12 by the intermission, leading Dayton (1-1) to a 46-17 first half advantage. Donovan led all scorers with 21 points. Cyndi Stull added 12 off the bench.
Marquette battled back in the second half, cutting Dayton's lead to 24, but the Flyers pushed the advantage to as many 30 with just over 10 minutes to play. The Golden Eagles then rallied in the rest of the period, eventually outscoring the Flyers 45-34 in the final 20 minutes.
"The second half we showed a team that I've seen in the past couple of weeks in practice," Mitchell said. "Dayton played a great game and showed a real sense of urgency. They dictated the game by coming at us early"
Marquette returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 26 against Wis.-Milwaukee at the U.S. Cellular Arena. Tip time is 6 p.m.
