MILWAUKEE - Marquette center Rachel Klug (Cedar Grove, Wis.) scored a career high 26 points but it was not enough as St. Francis guard Tonjee Ward scored 32 points to lead the Red Flash (1-2) past MU (1-2), 64-62.
The second half was anyone's game as Marquette led by as many as four with 15:21 to play. Down 45-41, the St. Francis went on a 16-5 run to take a seven point lead with 7:17 to go. Marquette battled back to cut the deficit to one with 1:35 to play, but the Red Flash was able to hold off the MU run to take the two point win.
"We had our opportunities down the stretch." head coach Terri Mitchell said. "We will get better from this."
Klug scored 14 points in the second half to finish with 26. She was 8-of-12 from the field and 10-of-10 from the line, but in the end, it was the result and not her accomplishment that mattered most to her.
"You don't think about the points, it's the game that matters," Klug said. "We are showing improvement."
St. Francis led by two at halftime, 33-31. Ward, who finished 11-of-19 from the field and 5-of-6 from three point range, scored 19 in the first half.
The first half was equally as tight as the second. Saint Francis opened up the game with a nine point lead, but Marquette inched back by the end of the first half. MU tied the score at 31 with 54 seconds to play in the half, but Ward hit a jumper with 20 seconds to give the Red Flash the lead at the intermission.
Marquette returns to action in the Hyatt Regency Atlanta Invitational, hosted by Georgia State. Marquette takes on Chicago State at the GSU Sports Pavilion at 7 p.m. EST in the second game of the tournament on Friday, Dec. 6.
