Milwaukee -- With the regular season quickly coming to a close, the Golden Eagles were hoping to put a quick fix on their five-match losing streak. Hosting Northern Illinois, a team Marquette had defeated the past two seasons, the Golden Eagles found themselves down early.
To make matters worse, sophomore Raj Gill (right forearm tendinitis) bowed out after doubles play, once again leaving Coach David Staniford little choice but to juggle his lineup around and have his players competing outside of their customary positions.
After ceding the first point of the day in doubles play, the Huskies snapped a two-match losing skid to Marquette. Marquette's No. 1 doubles team of Gill and Justin Holsen outlasted Aaron Forsberg and Raymond wan Wasbeek, 9-8.
Earning the Golden Eagles' other point on the afternoon was sophomore Creighton Macy. Playing from the No. 5 singles spot, Macy defeated Jon Perlman, 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8).
Marquette continues to be mired in its longest losing stretch of the year, now at six matches. The Golden Eagles are 6-10 on the spring. They will look to turn their misfortunes around next week, when they host DePaul in their final home match of the season. The team will then have two weeks to prepare for the Conference USA Tournament (April 18-21) in Louisville.
