The Marquette men's and women's track teams will begin their pursuit for the Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships beginning tomorrow.
Marquette's women's team begins its chase for a C-USA title in the competition's first day with the 10,000 meters. Junior Susan Barth (Bluffton, Ind.) leads a deep contingent into the race. She is one of the favorites coming in with a season best time of 34:12.72, already eclipsing the C-USA meet record she set last year at 35:09.00.
Barth will be in a battle with South Florida's Tara Quinn, who comes into the event with the best time of the season at 33:37.24. Barth is joined by senior Jackie Swan (West Allis, Wis). Swan has the fourth best time of the field at 36:06.96. Senior Sarah McCullough (Naperville, Ill.) is also competing for MU. She has posted the fifth best time of the 26-runner event at 36:09.36.
Distance runners will be a big key to Marquette's push toward a title. Sophomore Brianna Dahm (Two Rivers, Wis.) holds a shot at victory in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The C-USA Championships record holder, Dahm is a provisional NCAA qualifier, with a season best time of 10:21.42. Senior Jessie Swan (West Allis, Wis.) is also expected to be a big performer as she comes into the event with a time of 10:41.25, third best in the event. Sophomore Audrey Schiltz (West Des Moines, Iowa) will also compete in the steeplechase.
Barth, Dahm and Jackie Swan lead a strong contingent in the 5,000 meters, holding the fourth, fifth and sixth best times respectively of the 34-runner field. Jessie Swan will also run in the event for the first time this season.
Senior Jeannette Batie (Lynwood, Ill.) is entered in both the 100-meter and 400-meter hurdles. While posting the seventh best time of the field in the 100 hurdles, she has the second best time in the 400 hurdles. Her mark of 1:01.19 is second only to Houston's Alicia Cave at 59.36.
Freshman Tiffany Bilderback (Leavenworth, Kan.) and sophmore Julianna Wesolowski (Franklin, Wis.) round out the sprint corps, competing in the 400 meters.
Marquette will also field deep middle distance squads. Senior Jennifer Batie (Lynwood, Ill.) is one of the favorites in the 800 meters. Sophomore Jamie Haro (Brookfield, Wis.) and sophomore Sandy Fondow (Green Bay, Wis.) also will run in the 800. Sarah McCullough will be MU's lone entrant in the 1,500 meters.
In the field events, freshman Emily Leklem (Nekoosa, Wis.) and senior Julie Sorrentino (Machesney Park, Ill.) will compete in two events. Leklem will participate in the shot put and discus while Sorrentino will throw the discus and hammer. Junior Crystal Larson (Antioch, Ill.) will join Sorrentino in the hammer competition.
Freshman Andrea Engelmann (North Vancouver, B.C.) and freshman Christina LeDonne (Elmhurst, Ill.) will compete for MU in the triple jump.
Junior Amy Merrill (Santa Fe, N.M.) is throwing the javelin and will also compete in the heptathlon.
On the men's side, the Golden Eagles will place strength in numbers in the distance events. Four MU athletes will make eight starts in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, the 5,000 meters and the 10,000 meters.
Senior Jonathan Chenier (Barrie, Ontario) will look to finish strong in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. He enters the 14-runner event with the third best qualifying time at 9:22.01. Chenier is also joined by freshman Jason Chrichton (Burlington, Ontario) in the event. Chrichton should also score team points for MU as his 9:27.35 is the fifth best time of runners in the event.
Chrichton will also lead an MU contingent of four runners in the 5,000 meters. He will have to improve on his best time of 15:13.69 to earn points for the Golden Eagles as that time is 12th best among the 34-runner field. Chenier, sophomore Bo Erickson (Two Rivers, Wis.) and junior David Lance (Bellvue, Wash.) will also take part for MU.
Erickson and Lance will also take part in the ultimate endurance test of the 10,000 meters. Erickson has performed well in this event this season, posting a season best time of 31:49.22, the seventh best seed time of the 20-runner field.
The only other event where the Golden Eagles have more than two athletes entered is the 400 meters. Junior Marek Krawczyk (Muskego, Wis.) has MU's best time in this event of the three participating at 47.91, the sixth best of the 18-runner field. Senior Brian Hardin (Des Moines, Iowa) and freshman Ryan Seebruck (Necedah, Wis.) will also start for MU.
Senior Cameron Harvey (Oshkosh, Wis.) is MU's only athlete in the hurdles event. He will run in the 110-meter hurdles, looking to improve upon a season best time of 15.33.
In the middle distance events, sophomore Ryan Jacobson (Sister Bay, Wis.) will be MU's hope in the 800 meters. His time of 1:53.58 is the eighth best time in the 30-deep field. Jake Remitz will run the 1,500 meters in the 14-runner event.
The Golden Eagles will also field a team in the 4x400-meter relay and look to earn valuable team points in that event. Jacobson, Hardin, Seebruck and Krawczyk is the lineup for MU in that event.
MU has a strong field contingent in the championships led by sophomore Chris Schwandt (Watertown, Wis.) in the hammer. Schwandt is one of the favorites heading into the event posting a season best throw of 56.41 meters, the third best of the field.
Freshman Andy Ballard (Oregon, Ill.) and freshman Jon Rosploch (Plymouth, Wis.) are entered in two throwing events each. Ballard will throw the shot put and the discus while Rosploch is entered in the shot put and the javelin.
Freshman Charles Mashozhera (Harare, Zimbabwe) rounds out the MU list of competitors. He will take part in the triple jump and will make his season debut in the high jump.
Competition begins on Thursday, May 9 and continues through Saturday in Louisville, Ky.
