Milwaukee -- Ten home matches, including three against Conference USA Teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament a year ago, highlight the 2002 Marquette University volleyball schedule.
First-year Head Coach Pati Rolf and the Golden Eagles open the season Aug. 30-31 with an appearance in the Chippewa Classic hosted by Central Michigan University. MU will open the tourney with a match against Cleveland State on the first day before meeting Wyoming and Central Michigan on the final day of action.
MU will make its home debut the weekend of Sept. 6-7 when it looks to defend its Marquette Challenge title. This year's tourney, which will be played at the MU Gymnasium, includes Valparaiso, Lehigh, and Austin Peay State University. The Golden Eagles will take on Valparaiso on Friday (Sept. 6) at 7:00 p.m. before taking on Lehigh (noon) and Austin Peay State (7:00 p.m.) on Saturday.
Following the Marquette Challenge, the Golden Eagles continue tournament play when it plays at the Jayhawk Classic (hosted by Kansas), Sept. 13-14. Joining Marquette in that affair will be Kansas, Purdue and Southeast Missouri State.
Marquette's final regular-season tournament takes place Sept. 20-21 when it ventures to Fort Wayne, Ind., to play at the IPFW Invitational with a Western Illinois, Wright State and host IPFW.
This year in Conference USA each team will face every league opponent on one occasion. After opening loop play at East Carolina on Sept. 28, Rolf and her squad return home the weekend of Oct. 4-5 for a big matches against Louisville (Oct. 4, 7:00 p.m.) and Cincinnati (Oct. 5, 7:00 p.m.). Louisville finished the 2001 season in second place among league teams and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament en route to posting a 26-7 record. The Bearcats of UC claimed the conference's regular-season crown last year and also advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament while finishing with a 23-8 won-lost slate. The third home date against a league team that played in the 2001 NCAA Tournament is DePaul on Friday, Nov. 15 (7:00 p.m.). The Blue Demons, the owners of a 24-9 record last year, captured the C-USA Championship that automatically qualified them for NCAA play.
Other C-USA home dates for Marquette include Friday, Oct. 18, against Southern Miss, Saturday, Oct. 19, versus Tulane, Friday, Nov. 1, against TCU and Saturday, Nov. 2, vs. Houston.
This year's C-USA Championship will be held Nov. 22-25 and hosted by DePaul. Marquette's final regular season match will take place at North Carolina on Nov. 29. The Tar Heels are coming off a 24-9 record last season that included a second round NCAA Tournament appearance.
"We are excited about the upcoming schedule," said Rolf. "The non-conference matches early on will provide a good build-up to the Conference USA portion of the schedule. As for the conference, I know that both the team and myself are looking forward to the challenges of playing in a league that was ranked among the top five in the country last year."
