Marquette Volleyball Tops Cleveland State In Season Opener

Milwaukee -- The Marquette volleyball team got its 2002 season off on the right foot Friday afternoon, edging Cleveland State in five games in its opening match of the Chippewa Classic at Mount Pleasant, Michigan. MU defeated the Vikings, 25-30, 30-25, 30-21, 24-30, 15-11.
The Golden Eagles were led by sophomore Shannon Devine (Harris, Minn.) who led all players with a career-high 25 attacks while posting a match-best 46.5 hitting percentage (25-5--43). Freshman Theresa Coughlin (Chicago) contributed 17 attacks to aid in the victory while senior Amy Levin (Palatine, Ill.) chipped 14 kills, one shy of tying her career best in that category.
Marquette finished the match hitting 24.5 percent (74-29--184) while CSU posted a mark of 14.2 percent (55-30--176). Both teams came up with eight service aces while Cleveland State enjoyed a 12-6 edge in total blocks
Senior Danielle Hagen (Milwaukee) tied her career best with 21 digs and helped Marquette show a 82-63 edge in that department. Sophomore Erin Freer (Stevensville, Mich.) and freshman Caitlin O'Brien (Wauwatosa, Wis.) chalked up 16 and 10 digs, respectively.
Junior Gemma Greer (Winfield, Ill.) doled out 52 assists, boosting her career total to 1,995.
Marquette will take on Wyoming on Saturday morning starting at 9:00 a.m. (CST) before closing out the tournament on Saturday evening with a 6:00 p.m. match vs. host Central Michigan.
