Marquette Volleyball Falls In Five Games To Purdue

Milwaukee -- The Marquette volleyball team saw a determined rally fall just short this morning as it came out on the short end of a five-game decision to Purdue in the opening game of the Hampton Inn/Jayhawk Classic held in Lawrence, Kansas. The Golden Eagles saw their record fall to 5-2 following a 29-31, 13-30, 30-25, 30-26, 12-15 setback to the Boilermakers whose record improved to 8-1.
Sophomore Shannon Devine (Harris, Minn.) and freshman Theresa Coughlin (Chicago, Ill.) led the Marquette attack with 15 kills apiece while Devine contributed a season-best nine blocks (3-6). Senior Danielle Hagen (Milwaukee) and freshman Jessica Klein eached totaled 12 attacks with Hagen posting a team-high 31.0 hitting percentage (12-3--29) and 13 digs.
Purdue had five players finish with double figures in kills led by Kim Cappa and Kim McConaha with 15 each.
Marquette concluded the match with a 13.2 hitting percentage (66-40--197) while Purdue compiled a 21.1 attack percentage (67-31--171). The Golden Eagles enjoyed a 12-9 edge in total blocks while Purdue posted a 64-55 margin in digs.
Marquette continues play in the tournament this evening with a 7:00 p.m. match vs. host Kansas.
