Milwaukee -- The Marquette volleyball team opened play at the IPFW Invitational in Fort Wayne, Ind., this afternoon with a resounding three-game over Western Illinois. The Golden Eagles upped their record to 7-3 following a 30-20, 30-21, 30-17 decision over the Westerwinds who fell to 0-12.
Sophomore Shannon Devine (Harris, Minn.) turned in an outstanding match, registering a match-high 16 attacks while posting a 75.0 attack percentage (16-1--20). The freshman trio of Aga Niemcezewska (Vernon Hills, Ill.), Theresa Coughlin (Chicago) and Jessica Klein (Lena, Illinois) all contributed eight kills with Niemcezewska coming up with a match-leading 11 digs.
For the match, Marquette hit 36.6 percent (54-17--101) while Western Illinois finished with a mark of 12.2 percent (25-13--98). The Golden Eagles compiled a 51-27 advantage in digs and a 7-4 margin in service aces.
Marquette continues play in the IPFW Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 21) with a 1:00 p.m. meeting against Wright State and a 7:00 p.m. contest against IPFW.
