Marquette Volleyball Tops IPFW

Milwaukee -- The Marquette volleyball team closed out its appearance at the IPFW Invitational with a four-game win over host IPFW. The Golden Eagles finished second at the Invitational after recording a 23-30, 30-21, 30-26, 32-30 decision over the Mastadons. Marquette raised its record to 8-4 while IPFW fell to 7-8. Earlier on Saturday, MU fell to Wright State.
Senior captain Danielle Hagen (Milwaukee) turned in her best match of the season, totaling a career-high 17 kills while chipping in 15 digs. Hagen also paced the team with a 55.2 hitting percentage (17-1--29). Freshman Aga Niemcezewska (Vernon Hills) was the other Marquette performer to finish in double digits in attacks with 15 kills. Sophomore Erin Freer played a solid defensive match and finished with a team-leading 18 digs. Sophomore Shannon Devine (Harris, Minn.) complemented Freer's defensive effort with a career-high 12 blocks and seven digs.
For the match, Marquette hit 20.6 percent (57-24--160) compared to IPFW's 18.6 percent (65-31--183). The Golden Eagles chalked up 72 digs to IPFW's 65 and finished with a decisive 20.5-5.0 margin in total blocks.
Devine and Hagen were Marquette representatives to the IPFW Invitational All-Tournament Team. Hagen finished with 34 kills and 28 digs over the weekend while Devine totaled 29 attacks, 22 digs and 16 blocks.
