Marquette Volleyball Earns Road Win Vs. East Carolina

Milwaukee -- The Marquette volleyball team got its Conference USA season off on the right foot this evening as it topped East Carolina in three games. The Golden Eagles raised their record to 9-4 overall (1-0 C-USA) with a 30-23, 30-28, 30-24 road win over the Pirates who fell to 4-11 (0-1 C-USA).
Marquette was led by freshman Theresa Coughlin (Chicago) who posted 14 attacks while sophomore Shannon Devine (Harris, Minn.) totaled 13 kills en route to a 33.3 hitting percentage (13-4--27). Devine also registered a team-high four blocks. Sophomore Sarah Vernon (Englewood, Col.) dished out 22 assists and came up with seven kills to aid in the victory.
For the match, Marquette hit 26.9 percent (52-20--119) while East Carolina posted a mark of 16.3 percent (36-20--98). East Carolina did manage a 27-20 advantage in digs while the Golden Eagles finished the contest with a 7-4 edge in total blocks.
MU returns home next weekend when it entertains Louisville on Friday (Oct. 4) and Cincinnati on Saturday (Oct. 5). Both matches will be played at the MU Gym and begin at 7:00 p.m.
