Marquette Volleyball Tops Valparaiso In Home Opener

Milwaukee - The Marquette volleyball team made a successful home debut this evening, defeating Valparaiso in four games in its opening-round match of the Holiday Inn City Center Challenge held at the MU Gym. The Golden Eagles raised their record to 3-1 following a 30-24, 30-28, 28-30, 31-29 win over the Crusaders who were making their season debut.
Sophomore Shannon Devine (Harris, Minn.) and freshman Theresa Coughlin (Chicago) paced Marquette's attack with 16 kills each while Devine registered a team-best seven blocks. Freshman Aga Niemcezewska also registered double-figure kills with 15. Sophomore Erin Freer (Stevensville, Mich.) and senior Danielle Hagen (Milwaukee) paced a solid defensive effort with 27 and 21 digs, respectively.
For the match, the Golden Eagles hit 17.6 percent (62-29-188) compared to Valpo's effort of 16.9 percent (57-27-177). MU finished with an 87-75 edge in digs while posting a 12-9 margin in total blocks.
Valparaiso was led by Heather Hynds with 13 attacks.
In the night's opening match, Austin Peay State topped Lehigh in four games, 30-23, 30-23, 31-33, 30-24.
Marquette continues action in the Holiday Inn City Center Challenge on Saturday with a 10:00 a.m. match vs. Lehigh and a 7:00 p.m. contest vs. Austin Peay State.
