DAYTON, Ohio - The coaching duo of head coach Markus Roeders and associate head coach Frank Pelaez won their 100th match at Marquette, defeating Dayton, 1-0, in the final match of the Dayton Marriott Flyer Classic. Marquette (3-1) handed Dayton (3-1) its first loss of the season and its first loss in 17 home matches to win the tournament. Midfielder Carolyn Klopp (Glendale, Wis.) scored the match's only goal in the 69th minute.
Klopp's goal, her second of the season, came in the 69th minute as she picked up a loose ball and came in on a breakaway. From 20 yards out, she placed a shot inside the left post for a 1-0 Marquette lead.
Dayton goalkeeper Stephanie Weisenfeld made eight saves for the Flyers, including a spectacular save on a point-blank shot by senior defender Stephanie Welch in the 75th minute, keeping MU from going up by two goals.
Marquette out shot the Flyers 24-6 in the game, and held the Flyers without a shot on goal. The Flyers best chance came late in the second half, when Tesia Kozlowski headed a crossing pass inches to the left of the post from the eight-yard box.
"This is probably the best we've played all season," head coach Markus Roeders said. "We put together 90 minutes of solid soccer. I'm proud of the way we played today."
Marquette returns to action on Friday, September 13 at 7 p.m. at Valley Fields against Rhode Island.
