"We knew the ball had to go through Rachel," head coach Terri Mitchell said. "I thought she did a great job of distributing and shooting. We told her to score or kick the ball out before the double team arrived and that helped her post such great statistics."
Iowa State was led by Lindsay Wilson who scored 24. After Iowa State got off to a hot start, the Golden Eagle defense contained the Cyclones' long range shooting efforts in the second half. Iowa State shot 37.3 percent for the game and was 10-for-30 from behind the arc for the contest after hitting six of its first 10.
"Our game plan to stop the three did not work in the first half," Mitchell said. "We didn't get sucked into the paint as much in the second half and we held them to three three pointers in the second half."
Marquette extended its three point halftime lead to as many as 20, leading 70-50 with 11:39 left in the game. However, Iowa State was able to cut the MU lead to nine with 5:05 to play. The Cyclones would come no closer.
Both teams started out on fire in the first half. Marquette hit seven of its first nine shots while Iowa State was 6-of-10 from behind the three-point line. The Cyclones led 23-21 with 11:54 left in the half.
Each team went cold after that, with the score tied at 25 with 7:52 left. Marquette was able to pull out of its shooting funk to close the period. Led by 18 first half points by Klug, MU jumped out to as much as a six point lead with 2:53 left in the half.
Klug was 8-of-11 in the half, hitting Marquette's last three baskets before the intermission. Iowa State took care of the ball, only having three turnovers by the break, but shot poorly in the last 10 minutes of the half. The Cyclones, once shooting 57 percent, finished the half at 40.6 percent (13-of-32). They were led by 10 points from guard Lindsay Wilson, however, she was 2-of-10 shooting at halftime. Marquette led 44-41 at the half, a season high for first half scoring for MU.
