Men's Tennis Claims Resounding Win in Season Opener

Milwaukee- The Marquette men's tennis team ended its first match of the season on top of the University of Illinois-Chicago, 7-0. The Golden Eagles begin the season as 1-0. UIC falls to 0-1.
All of the Golden Eagles' victories came in straight sets. Freshman Eigintas Vedrickas defeated Nick Bodmer in the No. 1 singles match, 7-6, 6-2. Vedrickas' record improves to 5-8. No. 2 singles junior Troy Delmege defeated Ken Howrey, 6-3, 6-4, in his first match of the season.
Coach David Staniford said he was pleased with the performance of the younger members of the team.
"It was a good start for the freshmen," Staniford said.
Freshman Ian Kawas won his No. 5 singles match, beating Amol Desai, 6-1, 6-2, improving Kawas' record to 6-6.
Kawas and fellow freshman Eigintas Vedrickas claimed the No. 3 doubles match, 8-6, over Yevgen Ryeznik and Amol Desai.
The Golden Eagles' next match comes at home on Jan. 31 against Eastern Illinois at 4 p.m.
