Women's Basketball Picks Up Road Victory at Tulane

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Marquette continued its good play on the road, defeating Tulane, 59-47. Marquette (12-8, 4-4 C-USA) has the league's best record on the road at 7-2. Tulane falls to 14-6 and is 5-2 in league play.
Marquette survived Tulane's dominance on the glass with defensive pressure. Marquette forced 27 Tulane turnovers. The Green Wave kept the game close by grabbing 15 more rebounds than MU, but had trouble scoring in the second half. The Marquette defense held Tulane to 27.3 percent shooting in the second half.
"We had a whole different mentality with the size disadvantage," head coach Terri Mitchell said. "Tulane is on a roll after beating Cincinnati and is playing great. We played aggressive defense and attacked on offense. We had nothing to lose."
The Golden Eagles rode the hot shooting of Katie Alsdurf (Forest Lake, Minn.) who finished the game with 16, 10 coming in the second half. MU had contributions from everyone in the second half as six players hit field goals. Tulane shot itself in the foot, hitting just 13-of-25 of its free throws.
Katie O'Grady (Chicago, Ill.) scored 13 points. Nine Marquette players scored in the effort. Delacey Joseph led Tulane scorers with 13 points.
"I told them that, including this game, that we had seven games left," Mitchell added. "It's the time of year that you just have to compete."
Early in the half, Marquette turned a five point deficit to a quick seven point second half lead. The Golden Eagles opened the period on an 11-4 run to take its first lead of the game at 13:31, 30-28. Tulane responded by hitting its free throw chances to force at 41-41 tie with 7:24 left.
In what was a defensive first half, Marquette held Tulane with out a basket for 9:17 seconds nearing the end of the period. the Golden Eagles closed a 10-point Tulane lead to four in the run. However, Marquette struggled down the stretch in the first half as well. MU was held to one field goal in the final 4:16 of the period as Tulane closed the half with a 24-19 advantage.
Both teams had problems sinking baskets in the half and maintaining possession. Marquette was 7-for-33 (21.2 percent) in the half, while Tulane shot 10-for-24 in the period. The Golden Eagles committed nine turnovers, but forced Tulane into 16 miscues in the period. O'Grady led MU at the half with eight points. Delacey Joseph led Tulane with six points.
The 16 turnovers MU forced resulted in 14 points of turnovers. Tulane was able to launch as many shots as it did thanks to a 26-17 rebound advantage. However, the Wave was only able to convert the advantage to three second chance points.
Marquette continues its season on Sunday, Feb. 9 at Southern Miss at 2:30 p.m.
