MESTRE, Italy -- One night after offense provided Marquette with a victory, defense helped as the Golden Eagles prevailed, 73-57, over Italsoft Reyer in a women's basketball exhibition game in Mestre, Italy.
The Golden Eagles forced defensive pressure, causing the hosts to commit 28 turnovers. Marquette had 21 steals in the win, led by five from junior Monica Frede.Marquette also held its hosts to under 16 points in each quarter.
The game was a very close contest as Italsoft was able to keep most of the MU lineup in check. The only player Italsoft was unable to stop was senior Kelly Schwerman. She scored 25 points, most of which came before the start of the fourth quarter, to lead all scorers. Two players for Italsoft had double figures. Simona Sarni scored 11 and teammate Lia Valerio added 11.
Schwerman was on fire most of the contest. She hit 8-of-13 shots from the floor and was 6-of-9 from behind the arc. Sophomore Carolyn Kieger fed Schwerman on many of the attempts, logging eight assists. MU was balanced on the boards with everyone contributing, but no player with more than four.
MU's total could have been greater, had it not struggled in the first half from the line. The Golden Eagles were sent to the stripe a number of times, thanks to the much more physical play of the Italian team. MU, however was just 6-for-21 from the free throw line in the first two quarters.
The Golden Eagles have the day off tomorrow to travel to Como, Italy. MU will play on Thursday and Friday to finish its road trip.
