Marquette Volleyball Upends Duke In Five-Game Marathon

Milwaukee - The Marquette volleyball team evened its record at 1-1 this afternoon following a come-from-behind win over host Duke in the Duke Invitational. The Golden Eagles and Blue Devils battled for nearly three hours before Marquette came away with a 28-30, 33-31, 32-34, 39-37, 17-15 decision. The loss left Duke's record at 0-2.
Duke captured two of the first three games and led by a 37-36 margin in game four before Marquette rallied for three consecutive points that forced a decisive fifth game. In the fifth game, MU held leads of 7-3 and 10-6 before seeing Duke knot the score at 15-15. After a service error by the Blue Devils, freshman Jamie Mueller (Richfield, Wis.) closed out the match with a kill.
The Golden Eagles were paced by sophomore Theresa Coughlin (Chicago) who notched 28 attacks, her second-highest career total, along with a 34.9 hitting percentage (28-6--63). Mueller turned in a strong overall match with 22 kills along with 21 digs. Junior Erica Heisser (Greenville, Mich.) came through with a career-best 17 kills while senior Ann Lopata (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) rounded out the double-digit attackers for MU with 16. Junior Erin Freer (Stevensville, Mich.) played a stellar match defensively with a career-high 33 digs as did sophomore Caitie O'Brien with 18 digs. Senior Gemma Greer (Winfield, Ill.) doled out 58 assists and was aided in that category by junior Sarah Vernon who tallied 17 assists.
For the match, Marquette hit 21.5 percent (95-36--275) compared to Duke's 24.7 percent. The Blue Devils enjoyed a 121-110 edge in digs and finished with a 14-9 edge in blocks.
Marquette was to close out action in the Duke Invitational Saturday evening against Pittsburgh.
