Marquette Volleyball Drops Five-Game Decision To Dayton

MILWAUKEE - The Marquette volleyball team opened play in the NIKE Invitational Friday evening in Minneapolis with a tough five-game loss to the University of Dayton. The Flyers ran their record to 4-0 following a 22-30, 30-28, 21-30, 33-31, 18-16 win over the Golden Eagles who saw their record slip to 1-3.
Sophomore Theresa Coughlin (Chicago) paced five Marquette players who finished with double digits in attacks with 26 kills. Junior Erica Heisser totaled 13 kills while freshman Jamie Mueller (Richfield, Wis.) and senior Ann Lopata (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) each totaled 11 attacks with Mueller also chipping in 15 digs. Sophomore Aga Niemcezewska rounded out MU's double-figure attackers with 10 terminations.
Marquette finished the match with a 23.7 hitting percentage (81-34-198) compared to Dayton's 20.0 percent (63-28-175). MU enjoyed a 79-68 edge in digs while UD posted a 14-8 advantage in total blocks.
Marquette continues play in the NIKE Invitational on Saturday against Kansas and host Minnesota, ranked No. 13 in the country.
