Gonzaga Upends Marquette Volleyball

MILWAUKEE -- Marquette opened play in the Wingate INNvitational Friday evening by coming out on the short end of a four-game decision to Gonzaga. The Bulldogs topped the Golden Eagles, 30-26, 25-30, 30-25, 30-28, raising their record to 2-8 on the year, With the loss, Marquette saw its record fall to 2-8.
Junior Erin Freer (Stevensville, Mich.) paced the Marquette attack with a career-best 21 attacks while contributing 11 digs. Sophomore Theresa Coughlin (Chicago) posted 14 kills and tied for the team lead with 14 digs while senior Ann Lopata (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) rounded out MU's double-digit attackers with 10 kills.
Gonzaga hit 27.0 percent in the match (63-22--152) compared to the Golden Eagles' mark of 22.8 percent (74-35--171). MU ended the match with a 59-49 edge in digs while Gonzaga enjoyed a decisive 14-5 margin in blocks.
Marquette continues play in the Wingate INNvitational Tournament on Saturday when it battles Wyoming and host Montana State.
