MILWAUKEE, Wis. ? Former Marquette University women's soccer player Kate Gordon has been named the winner of the 2003 McCahill Award by the Marquette University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. She will be honored at halftime of the Marquette/Saint Louis men's basketball game on January 10, 2004, at the Bradley Center.
The McCahill Award was established in 1946 by the McCahill Family in memory of their son and brother, Captain Robert L. McCahill, a student-athlete and graduate of the college of Liberal Arts, 1942, who was killed in action during World War II on Iwo Jima in 1945. The award is based on achievement in athletics, scholarship and service to the university and is given each year to a student-athlete who has graduated the previous year. This year marks the 55th presentation of the McCahill Award. During that time Colonel William P. McCahill, brother of Robert, was the driving force behind the establishment and presentation of this award. After the passing of Col. McCahill in 1999, Marquette University officially recognized the lifetime accomplishments of Colonel William P. McCahill and now presents this award in both men's names.
Gordon was a four-time all-conference selection for Marquette and was a second-team All-American choice as a senior in 2002. She was a first-team All-American selection as a junior in 2001. Following her collegiate career, she was drafted by the Carolina Courage of the Women's United Soccer Association.
She finished college with 48 goals and 114 points, the second-highest totals in school history. Gordon is the third women's soccer player to win the McCahill Award, joining defender Rhegan Hyypio in 2001 and midfielder Kelly Roethe in 2000.
