The Marquette women?s tennis team (2-0) raced out to a quick point in doubles?, and cruised from there through the singles? to beat UIC (0-1) by a margin of 6-to-1 at Helfaer Tennis Stadium Friday evening.
Leading the way for the Golden Eagles were seniors Veronica Garcia Briseno and Genevieve Charron. The duo combined to dominate in their no. 1 doubles? match, beating Ayca Gumuscu and Iris Jaklin, 8-1. Their doubles? victory was part of a Marquette sweep of the doubles? matches, with the no. 3 pairing of Callan Smith and Dominika Dabrowski improving their record to 2-0, beating Molly Smith and Melanie Humphrey. The no. 2 combo of Eva Trujillo Herrera and Annabelle Espinosa took out the Flames? Beatriz Cabrera and Corey Steven, 8-6.
The momentum from the doubles? sweep carried into the singles competition, with Annabelle Espinosa getting Marquette on the board quickly with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Molly Smith. In her first two matches of the season, Espinosa has defeated her combined opponents 24 games to two.
Freshman Francina Bonnelly followed with a win in the no. 5 spot, going 6-4, 6-3 over UIC?s Melanie Humphrey.
Senior Genevieve Charron followed that with a straight sets win against Iris Jaklin at no. 2, carding a 6-3, 7-5 victory.
Dominika Dabrowski was not able to hold on to an early one set lead, and lost the only match of the day for the Golden Eagles. Corey Steven came back and picked up the win for the Flames, 3-6, 6-3 and 6-2.
That left Freshman Callan Smith and senior Veronica Garcia Briseno on the courts, each taken to three sets before earning thrilling victories. Smith?s came against UIC?s senior Ayca Gumuscu. Not intimidated by the Gumuscu?s 55-38 career record, Smith battled throughout, winning 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 10-7 to even her record at 1-1 on the season.
Garcia Briseno?s win was itself a roller coaster of momentum. The no. 1 singles player for Marquette won the first set easily, 6-1, but then lost the second 3-6. That left a third set showdown, which would go to a tiebreaker, where Garcia Briseno pulled out the win (7-2).
The Golden Eagles enter a stretch of road contests for the better part of a month, visiting Illinois, North Carolina, Charlotte and Iowa, before returning home to host Wisconsin on Feb. 18.
