2/27/2004 12:00:00 AM | Men's Tennis
After losing the doubles point, Marquette entered singles action and got quick leads in the nos. 4 and 6 matches. Troy Delmege won his first set at no. 4 singles, 6-2 and Ian Kawas took the first set of the no. 6 match, 6-7. Both Delmege and Kawas then dropped the second set. East Carolina then clinched the team victory while both Golden Eagle netters were still in play.
?We needed to find a way to close those matches out and put a little pressure on East Carolina,? said coach Steve Rodecap. ?But they never felt much pressure because we got down early in the second set and didn?t get a chance to play those matches out. We need to do a better job of once we get a lead shutting the door and not let them back in.?
Raj Gill entered the lineup again today after sitting out three matches. He was defeated by Felipe Fonseca, 6-2, 6-1, at the no. 3 match.
Creighton Macy then lost the no. 4 singles match, 6-3, 6-2, to Mark Gellard.
The no. 1 singles match clinched the win for the Pirates. Charl Meyer beat Hugo Leenders, 6-4, 7-5.
In the second day of action, Marquette faces rival DePaul at 1:30 p.m.
