Artist Omri Amrany spent seven months crafting the silicone bronze statue to replicate the image of Al in the final moment of Marquette?s victory in the 1977 NCAA Championship. The 4 1/2 feet tall, 1,420 pound granite base is etched with the names of Al?s former players, coaches, and staff. The statue was made possible through their generous gifts.
The Marquette Community was joined by the McGuire Family, as well as a number of Al?s former players and coaches, for the celebration. Along with the unveiling, the festivities included the opening of The Wheeler Walk of Champions, a procession of Marquette athletes, and speeches by Al McGuire's son Al, President Robert Wild, S.J., Athletics Director Bill Cords, Men's Basketball Head Coach Tom Crean and Women's Basketball Head Coach Terri Mitchell.
