8/5/2004 12:00:00 AM | Track & Field
Marquette Track and Field Head Coach Dave Uhrich named Michael Koenning Assistant Track and Field Coach today. Koenning will be in charge of Throws and will replace Jason Stuke who stepped down in June.
?Mike has been there as an athlete at the top level in winning the Division III Nationals,? Uhrich said. ?The fact that he is not that far removed from all of that will allow him to set a real good example to the team and will bring sprit to the position.?
Koenning joins the Marquette coaching staff following a three-year stint at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. While at Wartburg, Koenning coached seven All- Americans and one National Champion. His athletes established seven school records under his tenure and his teams won eight conference titles.
?It?s exciting to come back to the state and to try to use the resources at Marquette to develop a competitive program,? Koenning said. ?I loved competing and I love coaching just as much.?
As a student-athlete at Wis.-La Crosse, Koenning was the 2001 NCAA Div. III Champion in the Hammer Throw and was a part of two National Championship teams? the 2001 Indoor and 2001 Outdoor Champions. Koenning owns school records in both the Hammer Throw and Weight Throw.
?Not many high school athletes compete in the Hammer Throw,? Koenning said. ?That gives them an opportunity for kids to try something new and start from scratch and it gives me a challenge as a coach. It is a great event.?
An Exercise Science major at Wis.-La Crosse, Koenning was a student strength staff member and has since been certified as a Strength and Conditioning Specialist by the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
?I?m excited to coach at this level and I am excited for the challenges that lie ahead for Marquette?s Track and Field program in the BIG EAST,? Koenning said.
Koenning, and his wife Tammy will reside in Milwaukee.
