Golden Eagles lose to DePaul 85-72

January 20, 2004 - Despite 24 points from sophomore Dameon Mason, Marquette (14-3, 2-2) couldn?t overcome double-digit turnovers and 21 DePaul (11-4, 3-1) offensive rebounds, falling 85-72 to Blue Demons on Thursday night at Allstate Arena.
The game was the 100th between the two schools in men?s basketball, with the Golden Eagles holding 58-42 series advantage.
Sammy Mejia led five Blue Demons in double figures with a collegiate best 26 points. Lorenzo Thompson added 17, also a career high. Quemont Greer had 15, Drake Diener scored 12 and Marlon Brumfield had 10.
Senior point guard Travis Diener was the only other Marquette player in double figures with 15 points and nine assists. Diener also had three steals in the game, giving him 151 for his career and passing Dwyane Wade for ninth all-time in school history.
After a back and forth opening few minutes, during which the Golden Eagles held their only lead at 14-13, DePaul went on an 11-3 run to take its largest lead of the first half, 24-16.
Marquette responded with a 10-5 run of its own to trim the lead to three, 29-26, on a dunk by Ousmane Barro with 5:18 to play.
DePaul answered with a quick 5-0 run and then closed out the half on a Mejia three-pointer, sending the Blue Demons to the locker room with a 39-32 halftime lead.
Marquette opened the second half by quickly cutting their deficit to five, 41-36. Again the Blue Demons responded, going on a 7-0 run over the next three and half minutes to take a 14-point lead, 50-36.
The Golden Eagles got no closer than nine the remainder of the game as DePaul converted 16 of 18 free throws over the final three minutes to seal the victory.
Marquette returns to action this Saturday when it hosts Charlotte at the Bradley Center. Game time is 2:00 p.m. CT.
