Volleyball to host Future Fanatics Clinic Prior to Match on Saturday
MILWAUKEE ? The Golden Eagles (10-8, 3-3 BIG EAST) will look to move up in the conference standings Saturday, October 15, when they host BIG EAST Conference foe Syracuse (15-7, 4-2 BIG EAST) at 1 p.m. in the Al McGuire Center. Prior to the match against the Orange, the Golden Eagles will host a Future Fanatics Clinic in ?The Al? from 10:30-11:45 p.m.
?This match is crucial, no doubt about it,? said head coach Pati Rolf. ?The team is rested after having played on Wednesday, so we need to come ready to play Saturday. I think the key to this game will be execution of the basics and who shows up to play Saturday.?
The Orange come to ?The Al? with a two match win streak under its belt defeating Buffalo (3-0) and Cornell (3-2) in a doubleheader last Tuesday. Syracuse saw its share of ups and downs last weekend in conference play as it was swept by Pitt Saturday, Oct. 8, but defeated West Virginia, the next day. Senior outside hitter Kelly Duan leads the Orange with 4.22 kills per game, while adding 2.25 digs per game. Fellow senior outside hitter Katie Allen has been the most accurate of the Orange hitting 37.5 percent for the season ranking her second in the BIG EAST in hitting percentage. The two teams have met just twice before this, with the all-time series being tied at one each. The Golden Eagles earned the most recent win in 1997, taking the match in five games at the NC State Invitational.
Marquette enters Saturday?s match coming off a 3-1 win over instate rival UW-Green Bay on Wednesday night with the help of sophomores Tiffany Helmbrecht and Monica Renfrow who recorded banner performances against the Phoenix. Renfrow recorded not one error in her 10 attack attempts posting a career high six kills, hitting 60 percent, while Helmbrecht contributed 11 kills and making just one error to hit 58.8 percent in the match. The pair were also tough at the net for the Golden Eagles combing for nine block assists.
Children kindergarten age through grade eight are invited to attend a prematch Future Fanatics Clinic hosted by the Marquette volleyball team on Saturday beginning at 10:30 p.m. at ?The Al.? For more information please visit www.gomarquette.com and click on the volleyball page.
?We had a great turnout for the first clinic we hosted this season before the Notre Dame match,? said head coach Pati Rolf. ? Its always fun to work with the kids and we enjoy having them in attendance for the match afterward to see what Marquette Volleyball is all about.?
