Binkley and Shao Fall Short at ITA Midwest Regional

Freshman Stephen Shao faced Wisconsin?s Felipe Bellido in the first round of competition. Shao played a tight first set but came up short, losing, 7-5, and then lost momentum in the second, losing 6-2.
?I had a chance to win the first set serving 5-4 and just didn?t close it out,? Shao said. ?Then in the second set I started off slow and was never able to recover.?
Sophomore Brett Binkley also played well in the first set but lacked the intensity needed to get the victory. Michigan?s Peter Aarts was too much for Binkley to handle, losing 7-6(7), 6-4.
?It was a close match. I?m obviously disappointed that I didn?t win but I competed hard,? said Binkley. ?It was tough to lose the first set because we kept going back and forth. If I could have attacked him on a few points, I think the set would have gone differently but unfortunately I had chances but didn?t capitalize on them. I play doubles tomorrow with Eigis so I?m going to move on and I?m excited for doubles.?
Binkely and senior teammate, Eigis Vedrickas will play doubles tomorrow against the Badger?s Nolan Polley and Bellido. Vedrickas also awaits his first day of singles competition on Saturday, when he?ll play Ball State?s Matt Bacarrani.
