Golden Eagles get chances, but Irish defense blanks MU
MILWAUKEE ? A goal in the 40th minute from Notre Dame's Justin McGeeney and a solid defensive effort, which kept Marquette off the scoreboard, gave Notre Dame a 1-0 win at Valley Fields.
McGeeny scored on a shot from 10 yards away after Ian Etherington delivered a fine cross. Etherington took the ball into the corner and played with it until finding a seem between a pair of Marquette defenders before placing the ball in front of the goal mouth.
"It was a great goal the scored," head coach Steve Adlard said. "It changed the game for us as far as being one-down, but we were playing well up to that point. They had tremendous possession and picked our pocket a few times, but once we got that down, we responded well."
The Marquette defensive effort was solid otherwise. The Golden Eagles (4-5-1, 1-4-1 BIG EAST) allowed 10 shots to the Irish, but only three others were on goal, none of which were significant scoring chances. Marquette keeper Andy Kroll made all three saves.
The Golden Eagles had seven shots of their own and one nearly provided a goal-scoring moment. Sophomore defender Mike Carlson played a ball forward that freshman striker Dan Addis played to the near post. Notre Dame goalkeeper Chris Cahill, who had two saves on the night, slid to his left and was able to get both his hands on the ball at the post. He couldn't make a comfortable grab as he had to keep his hands forward, past the goal line as his body and momentum carried him into the goal.
MU had just two shots on goal on the night, the second coming from freshman forward Duncan Silvert-Noftle. Marquette was without starting forward Matt Blouin for much of the night after he missed the second after being kicked in the ankle.
"The issue is you are a goal down and time is running down and you press to score," Adlard said. "What you are doing is getting it in, getting it in, getting it in, and you have to get someone on the end of it. Without Blouin, you lose the natural person on that end."
Play throughout the contest was relatively consistent from both sides until the final few minutes of the contest, when Marquette had to press forward. Notre Dame (7-3-1, 3-2-1 BIG EAST) created some counter attacks, but MU kept the contest within one goal.
"Their number 22 (Dale Relas) is very good on defense," Adlard said. "He is a mountain and their keeper is very solid as well. So it's not like you just press and something happens because you press, especially against a team like this."
The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, October 8, taking on Pittsburgh at 7 p.m. at Valley Fields.
