Day Two?Wisconsin Fall Invitational

MILWAUKEE?The Marquette men?s tennis team wrapped up the second day of the Wisconsin Fall Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The men were not able to defeat Northern Illinois, in their second loss to the team in two weeks, losing, 6-0. The teams met previously on September 23 at the Milwaukee Tennis Invite, where the Huskies took down the Golden Eagles, 5-1.

The lone win for Marquette came from freshman Mario Lopez when he took down NIU?s Hayes, 7-5, 4-6, 10-5. Pete Van Lieshout took Diego Zegarra to three sets but came up short in the third, losing the match, 6-3, 6-7, 11-9.

?We played really flat in singles,? head coach Steve Rodecap said. ?It wasn?t our best effort. We didn?t take advantage of the third set tie breakers. We were in there and let our chances slip away.?

With a new look in the lineup for doubles, the Golden Eagles came back with more intensity. Greg Sirotek teamed up with Lopez at no. 3, to defeat Northern Illinois? David Katz and Hayes, 8-3. Marquette came up short at no. 1 and no. 2, giving up the doubles point to the Huskies.

The Golden Eagles finished out the day with doubles matches verse Minnesota. All three matches were very close but Eigis Vedrickas and Ian Kawas were not able to walk away with the win at no. 1, falling 8-6. Senior Ricky Servoss matched up with Lopez to outplay the Gopher duo of Adam Altapeter and Pierre Dumas, 8-3.

?We played well against Minnesota in doubles. We had nine match points at no. 3 doubles,? Rodecap said. ?It was a good level of tennis. It was a hard fought match but we came up short. Credit should be given to Minnesota, they are one of the best teams in our region.?

Marquette will finish play tomorrow against Drake and match up with Minnesota again in singles.
