?Despite the result, I thought we played great,? said head coach Pati Rolf. ?Kim Todd, Jamie (Mueller) and Caitie O?Brien all had excellent games. We did some good things and are still moving in the right direction as we end the regular season and move into the BIG EAST Tournament.?
The Cardinals won the first two games 30-23 and 30-18, behind a 41.4 and 52.9 hitting percentage, respectively, while recording just five errors combined in the two games.
Louisville took an early four-point lead that Marquette could not relinquish en route to the first win. In the second stanza, after trading points early, the Cardinals mounted a 13-5 run sparked by a kill from Stephanie Marsh and never looked back to take game two and hold the 2-0 advantage heading into the looker room.
After the intermission, the Golden Eagles held off the sweep winning the third game, 30-28. The Golden Eagles held as much as a five-point advantage leading for most of game three, but Louisville rallied to tie the game up at 28 apiece. A kill by sophomore Monica Renfrow put the Marquette ahead by one and a Cardinal attack error clinched the 30-28 win for the Golden Eagles.
The Cardinals ended the Golden Eagles? dream of an upset winning game four 30-23, and the match 3-1. Marquette was held to a 9.8 hitting percentage even with junior Jamie Mueller hitting a game high 10 kills.
Senior Lena Ustymenko led Cardinals with 21 kills while hitting 43.2 percent for the match and two additional Cardinals contributed double-figured kills in the effort. Collectively Louisville hit 42.5 percent for the match compared to the Marquette?s 17.3 hitting percentage. Mueller led Marquette with 23 kills and reigning BIG EAST Player of the week Kim Todd added 15 kills, 10 digs and four service aces.
The Golden Eagles will wrap up the regular conference season tomorrow taking on Cincinnati at the Fifth Third Arena at 2 p.m. EST.
