MILWAUKEE ? A week removed from its last marathon match, the Marquette volleyball team took tonight?s match to five games and defeated BIG EAST Conference foe Seton Hall in the Al McGuire Center on senior night, 3-2 (24-30, 30-25, 24-30, 30-26, 15-12). BIG EAST Player of the Week Kim Todd nailed 35 kills setting a school record for individual kills in a match to help the Golden Eagles improve to 15-10, 7-5 BIG EAST.
?Kim Todd had the game of her life tonight,? said head coach Pati Rolf. ?Her phenomenal play was one of the reasons we won. I thought as the match progressed we got more aggressive and wanted to win. Like the rest of our wins, this one is huge. It shows we can fight through adversity and play our game and get the result.?
The Pirates won the first game, 30-24, behind a team hitting percentage of 50 percent. Seton Hall registered five service aces but the Golden Eagles won the kills battle 21-13, despite the Pirates earning nine points on Marquette attack errors.
Todd exploded in game two with eight kills leading the Golden Eagles to the 30-24 victory tying the match at one game apiece. After being tied at 13-13, a kill by Todd sparked a 6-2 run and Marquette never looked back. Together the Golden Eagles hit 35 percent, with senior Theresa Coughlin and sophomore Monica Renfrow contributing five and four kills apiece, respectively.
Seton Hall grabbed the third game, 30-24, while hitting 47.1 percent. The Pirates went on a 9-2 run to hold a 17-9 advantage, while the Golden Eagles could never relinquish the deficit.
Marquette won the fourth game, 30-26, to force a fifth and deciding game. In a meager hitting effort by both teams, the Golden Eagles came out on top with .205 attacks percentage and holding Seton Hall to hit just 4.2 percent.
The Golden Eagles riding the momentum of the fourth game win, clinched the match winning game five 15-12. Marquette stormed out of the gate leading 5-1 en route to its fourth straight conference win. Todd recorded six kills in the victory, while Coughlin and junior Jamie Mueller each tallied three.
?We need this win, it was important for us to win our last home conference match of the season? said Todd. ?We played with heart and won this for ourselves, the seniors and the fans. I give a lot of credit to Seton Hall. They played well, the hit, they played defense, they did it all. They are certainly better than their record. ?
Mueller ended the night with her 11th double double of the season with 16 kills and 17 digs. The junior needs just three digs to reach 1, 000 for her career and will get her chance next weekend at Louisville. Coughlin added 15 kills and 12 digs for her 12th double double of the season. Collectively Marquette hit 29.7 percent for the match.
Tricia Meyers led Seton Hall with 21 kills and 10 digs, while two other Pirates contributed double figured kills in the effort.
With the win tonight, the Golden Eagles improve their win streak to five matches and solidify their spot in the BIG EAST Conference Tournament hosted by Louisville November 18-20.
The Golden Eagles return to action next weekend when they travel to seventh-ranked Louisville on Saturday, November 12 at 2 p.m. EDT, before closing out the conference regular season at Cincinnati on Sunday.
