MILWAUKEE - Marquette volleyball head coach Pati Rolf has announced the signing of Caryn Mastandrea to a national letter of intent. Masandrea joins Leslie Bielski as the Golden Eagles other signee.
A 5-8 setter from Downers Grove, Ill., Mastandrea was a three-year letterwinner for Downers Grove South High School. She helped the Mustangs to three straight conference championships (2003-05), back-to-back regional and sectional championships (2003 and 2004) and a fourth-place finish at the Illinois State Championships in 2004. A member of the First Alliance, Mastandrea helped her club team to qualify for Junior Olympic Nationals five consecutive years.
As team captain in 2005, Mastandrea was also an all-conference selection in and was named team MVP, while posting 460 assists, 75 digs, 67 kills, 30 blocks and 10 service aces. In her junior year (2004), she earned All-Area honors and led the team in digs (245), and was second on the team in kills (255).
Caryn?s sister, Annie, is a sophomore defensive specialist on Purdue volleyball team. Annie became the first Purdue player since 1990 to eclipse the 30-dig mark with 31 against Missouri in 2004. Currently she holds the third best single season dig tally with 531 digs this season.
?We are looking forward to having Caryn join our team next season,? Rolf said. ?She brings a wealth of experience from both of her high school and clubs teams, and her family has a remarkable athletic background. She will provide us depth at the setters spot and will contribute almost immediately.?
