The Golden Eagles, which were ranked as high as sixth nationally this season, advanced to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Championship this season, losing to eventual national runner-up UCLA on Nov. 19. Marquette finished its outstanding season with a 19-4-1 overall record and a 9-2 mark in BIG EAST play.
For Roeders, who was never had a losing season in his 10 years at the helm of the Golden Eagles, it is his second coaching award this season. Prior to the league's championship, his peers in the BIG EAST voted him as their Coach of the Year - his third such conference coaching honor. Roeders was named Conference USA Coach of the Year, in 1996 and 2000, as well as being recognized as C-USA's Coach of the Decade. In 2000, he earned NSCAA Great Lakes Region honors.
?Being named Coach of the Year is a great honor, but the credit goes to our team, coaches and the support staff at Marquette University." said Roeders. "I am honored that my name is attached to the award, but the honor is a reflection of our team?s success this fall. I have to give thanks to Frank Pelaez, Dano Holcomb, Rob Lestina and Katie Bissen, an outstanding staff; but more importantly, the thanks have to go to our players. These incredible women have shown again that they believe in each other and that they will go above and beyond to be successful as a team.?
