The Golden Eagles claimed the No. 2 doubles pro set in a quick 8-3 decision by Brett Binkley and Pete Van Lieshout. Marquette couldn?t close out the Nos. 1 and 3 sets, however, and entered singles play without the doubles point.
?We got off to a really slow start in singles and I think a lot of it was coming from doubles play,? coach Steve Rodecap said.
Van Lieshout, the only Wisconsinite on the roster, was the sole Golden Eagle to take his singles match. He defeated Steve Guntly, 7-5, 6-4 in the No. 6 battle.
?We kind of took pressure off (Wisconsin) because we didn?t take any first sets,? Rodecap said. ?Pete did a good job, he?s from Wisconsin and he played with a lot of emotion. We just didn?t react in the way I thought we should have.?
Marquette now heads to Boise, Idaho for the Boise State Invitational, March 23-25.
?We?re at ?five hundred? right now and I think it?s important we going into the conference action at ?five hundred.? We?ll just keep working and trying to get better at the things we?re lacking,? Rodecap said.
