MILWAUKEE?In conjunction with Conference USA?s 10th anniversary, the league is naming a team of the decade for each of the conference?s 19 sports. Two former Marquette women?s tennis players ? Ana Fernadez and Elisa Penalvo ? earned spots on the women?s tennis All-Decade Team.
?What a tremendous honor for both of them,? said Coach Jody Bronson. ?They were outstanding for Marquette as people and as players.?
Fernandez finished her career at Marquette in 1998. She was named Conference USA Player of the Year in 1999 and holds the all-time wins leader position with 129 singles wins. She led Marquette to two NCAA Tournament appearances in 1997 and 1998. Fernandez earned First Team All-Conference USA in 1997, 98, and 99.
Penalvo , a teammate of Fernandez, also earned the All Decade honor. Penalvo wrapped up her career in 2000, after being named Conference USA Player-of-the-Year and Conference USA Freshman-of-the-Year in 1997. She holds the school record for all-time doubles leader with 98 wins. Penalvo contributed to three NCAA Tournament appearances for Marquette and participated in the 1997, 98, and 99 NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships.
?Ana and Elisa put Marquette at the national level and brought recognition to our program,? Bronson said. ?The opportunity for Marquette University and women?s tennis to have two players of their caliber was truly an honor.?
The naming of the team coincides with the Conference USA Women?s Tennis Tournament, which is to be held this week in Fort Worth, Texas.
