Women' Tennis Takes Down Cincinnati, 4-3

In doubles play, the Marquette duo of Elsemieke Dokter and Erin Watkins finished up first taking down Cincinnati?s sister duo of Jill and Julie Klauck, 8-4. Finishing next at No. 3, Dominika Dabrowski and Francina Bonnelly came up short against the duo of Cristina Reyes and Maddy Reasoner, 8-6. At No. 1, Maria Calbeto and Callan Smith fell behind 6-7, and were not able to fight back, losing to Sam Liu and Hannah Hinton, 8-6.
?We should have swept the doubles point, so we made it hard on ourselves,? said Coach Jody Bronson. ?Fortunately, we were able to pull ourselves out of a hole.?
Going down 1-0, Marquette had their work cut out for them in singles play. Bonnelly took care of Cincinnati?s Julie Klauck in two sets, winning the match 6-4, 6-2, at No. 5. The rest of the matches took three sets to decide a winner.
The Bearcats were able to take a victory from Marquette at No. 1 when Reyes defeated Smith, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2.
After going down in the first set, 1-0, Dabrowski battled back to win the next two sets, defeating the Bearcats Reasoner, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. The meet was tied at 2-2, when Calbeto gave the Golden Eagles an edge by beating Liu, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 2 spot.
The meet was decided at No. 4, where Watkins split the first two sets and then was able to take the third, to defeat Hinton, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Bronson was pleased with the determination shown by her players.
?Today was not our best tennis but we were able to win. We played with heart and desire and that is something we?ve struggled with this year.?
The Golden Eagles will meet another conference rival, DePaul, on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
