Mario Lopez to Join 2005-06 Men's Tennis Team

Lopez attends Academia Perpetuo Socorro in Bayamon, Puerto Rico where he played at the No. 1 singles spot as team captain and garnered such awards as the Osvaldo Gil Award given to a Puerto Rico high achievement junior tennis player. He was also voted team MVP in 2003 and 2004. Lopez was given the Sportsmanship Award at the 2002 USTA Zone Team Championship in Austin, Texas.
?Mario is a player that will come in and have a chance to contribute to our line-up immediately,? Rodecap said. ?Mario has set high goals and standards for himself as a player, which will allow him to fit into what we believe is important for the future of our program.?
A member of the Puerto Rico Tennis Team, Lopez received international exposure at the World Youth Cup in Mexico, the Junior Davis Cup in El Salvador and the JITIC in Cuba.
?I really enjoyed my visit to Marquette and felt a good connection with the team and coach Rodecap,? Lopez said. ?I like the competitive style of coach Rodecap and the motivation and unity he gives to the team.?
Lopez is joining three additional newcomers to the 2005-06 squad, Eric Fleming, Trent Hagan and Stephen Shao.
