Marquette senior ousted in first round
LEBANON, Ohio ? Marquette senior Nathan Colson lost his first round match in match play at the 80th U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at Shaker Run Golf Club in Lebanon, Ohio. It is the second time in three years that Colson qualified for the match play rounds of the event. He lost in the first round both times.
Colson fell to Jeffrey Overton of Evansville, Ind., 4-and-3. Overton was the sixth seed following the qualifying rounds.
Overton took an early lead, shooting birdie on the 599-yard, par-5 first hole. He advanced his lead by shooting a birdie on the 450-yard, par four second hole.
Two holes later, Overton advanced the lead to 3-up after Colson failed to make par on the 473-yard, par-four fourth hole.
Overton maintained the advantage until hole seven, when he took advantage of another Colson bogey on the 412-yard, par-4 hole.
Colson regrouped on the early holes of the back nine, but his deficit was too much. He regained a hole on the 164-yard, par-3 11th with a birdie, but Overton advanced the lead to 4-up by shooting a birdie on the par-4 13th.
Over the next two holes, the two both shot par, thus ending the match with Overton winning, 4-and-3. Overton advances to the round of 32 to take on Nick Becker of Boise, Idaho, who defeated Matt Williams of Holton, Kansas, 3-and-1.
