Silvert-Noftle goal in 78th minute earns a draw
SYRACUSE, N.Y. ? Marquette was able to rebound from a first-half goal to earn a tie with Syracuse, 1-1, in the team's first BIG EAST contest. Freshman Duncan Silvert-Noftle scored for the second time this season to earn the tie.
Playing in its first BIG EAST contest, Marquette (3-1-1, 0-1-1 BIG EAST) came out reserved, but relaxed shortly into the match.
"We felt a bit of pressure being the first BIG EAST game and it got the best of us early," head coach Steve Adlard said. "We overcame that and got into the rhythm quickly."
The Golden Eagles got on the board in the 78th minute on a goal by Silvert-Noftle. The strike was Silvert-Noftle's second of the season. It came on a diagonal pass from Nathan Sabich who fed it to Silvert-Noftle from 15 yards out.
"The goal was a masterpiece," Steve Adlard said. "It was low and it with the angle it was played in at, it was unstoppable."
Marquette knotted the match in the second half after Syracuse (4-0-1, 0-0-1 BIG EAST) scored in the 20th minute. Pete Rowley finished off a play on an assist from Ezra Prendergast.
"The ball came across the net and kind of floated; it was pretty messy," Adlard said. "It was a fine buildup and it was created well and they took advantage of that."
The Golden Eagles out-shot Syracuse 3-1 in the overtime session and nearly ended the contest when Jamie Zarse hit the post in the second overtime.
"We had the better play in the second half," Adlard said. "Syracuse is a nice team. They move the ball well and have some players with flair. But once it got to the second half and overtime, we were the better team. However, 1-1 is a positive result."
Marquette continues a short road trip with a visit to no. 10 St. John's on Sunday, September 18 at 2 p.m. EDT. St. John's is coming off a 2-1 win over nationally ranked Notre Dame.
"The game against St. John's will be tremendously stressful," Adlard said. "If we play with this style of defense, we will do well. We can't make mistakes in the back against that team. They will make you pay for them."
The Golden Eagles have been doing well on the defensive end, having given up just two goals all season and one in the last four games.
"We've give up just two goals in five games, but now we have to see if we can do it against one of the nation's best teams," Adlard said.
