Women' Tennis Concludes First Weekend Of Play
9/18/2005 12:00:00 AM | Women's Tennis
Erin Watkins played a close first set and then took control in the second to beat Haly Calderwood of BSU, 7-6, 6-0. Sophomore Maria Calbeto had a good win for the Golden Eagles, taking down UIC?s Corey Steven, 6-4, 6-4. The third victory came from junior Katie Donovan when she breezed past Jenna Tellefsen of Minnesota, 6-0, 6-1.
?Erin and Calbeto pulled out two singles matches and did some good things,? head coach Jody Bronson said. ?It wasn?t our best tennis but we grinded out a couple wins and learned how we need to make adjustments.?
The Golden Eagles did not have success in doubles, where Western Michigan?s Malena Remynse and Noriko Saruta defeated Francina Bonnelly and Dominika Dabrowski, 8-3. The Marquette duo of Donovan and Watkins played tough against the Bronco?s Reedhina Parekh and Colleen Mead but came up short losing the match, 9-8.
?We changed up the doubles teams and realized where some of our weaknesses are,? Bronson said. ?It will help us concentrate and work on certain areas in doubles.?
The women will return to action next weekend when they compete in the Milwaukee Tennis Classic at the Western Racquet Club.
