Golden Eagles create chances in second half, but come up empty
MILWAUKEE ? Hampered by an early penalty kick goal by Cincinnati, Marquette couldn't recover from the deficit and lost 2-0 at Valley Fields in the first BIG EAST men's soccer game played at the facility. Cincinnati remains atop the Red Division standings improving to 4-2-1 overall and 3-0-1 in BIG EAST play. Marquette falls to 3-3-1 and 0-2-1 in BIG EAST action.
Cincinnati scored first on the penalty kick goal by Sam Miller in the 41st minute. The Bearcats were awarded the free shot at goal when a shot by Kwamie Sarkodie went into the hand of Marquette defender Mike Carlson in the penalty area. Miller converted the PK playing the ball low and to the left of Marquette goalkeeper Andy Kroll.
"When they got the PK, we were in a mode of containment, but we turned the ball over in a critical situation as it disorganized us, leading to their shot." head coach Steve Adlard said. "It was an innocuous ball and had no threat to goal, but it hits the hand and they call it."
Marquette came out more aggressive in the second half, creating opportunities. The Golden Eagles had their best scoring opportunity when junior Matt Soper one-timed a free kick by junior Pat Knoelke. Soper's shot, which came from five yards away from goal, was smothered by Cincinnati goalkeeper Mike Vessells.
"I was tremendously disappointed with the first half, but we escaped from potential problems," Adlard said. "We played in the second half the way we need to play all the time. We created chances, but just didn't finish them. The game had passion and aggression and that's the way we need to play."
Marquette's aggression paid dividends in terms of corner kicks. The Golden Eagles had seven second half corner kicks, creating plenty of opportunity. Ironically, it was a Marquette corner kick that led to Cincinnati's second goal.
After senior Blair Kohlmeyer played in a corner in the 79th minute, Cincinnati's Mike Dwyer earned possession and blasted a ball down the field. UC's Omar Cummings was in what would have been an offside position, but when the ball was played, he was still in Cincinnati's half of the field, nullifying any offsides call. Cummings had a 20-yard lead on any Marquette defender except Kroll, who came out to challenge Cummings 40 yards away from net. After beating Kroll, Cummings dribbled the ball into the Marquette net.
"We let in two really weird goals tonight," Adlard said. "If we go in nil-nil, we probably win the game the way we played in the second half."
The Golden Eagles return to action on Sunday, September 25 at 3 p.m., taking on Louisville in the second half of a doubleheader with the Marquette women's team.
