The No. 30 ranked Marquette women?s cross country team finished in a tie for seventh place in the Gold Race at the Roy Griak Invitational this afternoon. The six-kilometer race was held on the Les Bolstad Golf Course on the campus of the University of Minnesota.
The Golden Eagles totaled 222 points, tying them with defending BIG EAST champion Providence. Arizona State captured team honors, with 88 points, followed by host Minnesota (156 points) and Baylor (177).
Sophomore Cassie Peller was the first Marquette runner to cross the line, finishing 36th overall in a time of 22:05. Following closely behind Peller were three teammates ? senior Jodi Jakubek (40th place, 22:09), senior Susie Emond (42nd, 22:11) and junior Michaela Courtney (43rd, 22:11). Junior Alli Sauer rounded out the Golden Eagles scorers in 61st place (22:29). The spread between the 1-4 runners was an outstanding six seconds, and just 24 seconds from 1-5. Junior Heidi Lindeman finished in 73rd place (22:42) and senior Terri Emond was 100th (23:03) to complete the MU finishers.
?It was a good solid race for us today, but I think we?re capable of better.? said head coach Dave Uhrich. ?What was important for us today was the way our pack ran. Tradtionally, we have come on strong following this meet so today was a good sign.?
On the men?s side, Marquette finished 22nd overall with a team total of 555 points. BYU captured the race with 117 points.
Sophomore Kyle Saginus was MU?s first finisher, crossing the line in 45th place in a time of 25:13 for the five-mile course. Junior Jeremy Williams finished 88th (25:46) while sophomore Josh Pinter was 133rd (26:29). Senior David Henderson (143rd, 26:43) and freshman Drew Craig (146th, 26:50) rounded out the Golden Eagle scorers. Freshmen Kurt Keuter (167th, 27:33) and Scott Allen (170th, 27:39) completed the Marquette finishers.
?We?ve very young and inexperienced on our men?s side, but overall I?m pleased with the progress we?re making.? said Uhrich. ?We could?ve done a little better but with every race, our team gains more and more experience and from that, the results will improve.?
The Golden Eagles return to action on Saturday, Oct. 1 when they compete at the Loyola Lakefront Invitational.
