Freshman Silvert-Noftle's goal gives MU win over ranked team
COLUMBUS, Ohio ? The Marquette men's soccer team picked up a 1-0 win over no. 23 Penn State. Marquette's has had recent success against nationally ranked teams. The Golden Eagles last defeated a ranked team when it knocked off 11th-ranked USF on October 23 last season and have won two of its last three meetings with ranked teams.
Marquette (1-1) was the more aggressive team in the first half, owning a 4-1 advantage in shots. Silvert-Noftle picked up his first career goal thanks to that aggressiveness. Matt Blouin assisted the freshman as he broke away down the left side toward the goal and past Penn State keeper Conrad Taylor.
The Golden Eagles took a defensive stance in the second half, allowing Penn State (0-2) most of the possession. The Nittany Lions out-shot Marquette 5-1 in the second half, but the Marquette defense, behind the solid play of central defender Nathan Sabich, held the powerful Penn State offense with out a shot on goal for the entire match.
"We played a great first half and dominated play and possession and frustrated them in everything they tried to," head coach Steve Adlard said. "I don't think they got into flow of game. Obviously with no shots on goal it gives indication."
Sophomore goalkeeper Steven Grow did not have to make a save during the 90 minutes of action.
"The more the second half wore on, the more we decided to consolidate what we had. That doesn't mean we dropped back, but when we got possession, we limited some of what we tried to do," Adlard added. "Grow was in goal. He came out and cleared some things with a punch and a catch in the second half and their was one scramble in the goal mouth, but the boys absorbed whatever came their way. Penn State was frustrated all day."
In contrast to Friday's match with no. 19 Ohio State, this contest was much less physical. The Golden Eagles kept their foul count in check, committing only six. Marquette also was clean in the booking department, not recording a yellow card. The Golden Eagles were carded five times on Friday night.
Marquette finished third in the Ohio State Tournament. Sabich and fellow defender Bryan Dahlquist were named to the All-Tournament Team.
The Golden Eagles next take on Drake at Valley Fields at 7 p.m. on Friday, September 9.
