MU forward honored after 29.0 point per game effort for the week
MILWAUKEE ? Marquette received its first ever men?s basketball BIG EAST Player of the Week honor as the league office named senior forward Steve Novak as its? Co-Player of the Week.
Novak averaged 29.0 points and 13.0 rebounds per game over the week. He tied for the programs fifth highest single-game scoring effort with 41 points in the win over second-ranked Connecticut last Tuesday, 94-79. Novak also grabbed a personal best 16 rebounds to record his first career double double. Novak?s 41 points marked the highest point total by a single player in his BIG EAST debut, and the combined total of 41 points and 16 rebounds was the highest combined total by any player in BIG EAST history. Novak repeated his double-double performance with a 17-point, 10-rebound effort on Saturday against Cincinnati. Over the course of the week, Novak was 10-of-20 from behind the three-point arc. Novak also extended his school record free throw streak to 68, before that came to an end with his final attempt in the Cincinnati game. He heads into the upcoming week needing two three-point field goals to become Marquette?s all-time record holder in that category.
Novak shared the Player of the Week award with Cincinnati's Eric Hicks.
This is the third time an MU player has been honored by the league. Freshmen Dominic James and Jerel McNeal were each named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week earlier this season.
The Golden Eagles return to BIG EAST action on Wednesday, January 11, taking on Seton Hall in East Rutherford, N.J., at 7:30 p.m. EST. That game airs locally on WMLW Ch. 41 at 6:30 p.m. CST.
