Golden Eagles Commence Three Game Homestand Against Gonzaga Sunday

After an eight day hiatus, the no. 21/25 Marquette women's basketball team returns to action at the Al McGuire Center for a non-conference match-up with Gonzaga Sunday, December 17, at 2 p.m.
Sunday is Mascot Mania and Krystal Ellis Trading Card Day. It is also Racine County Day. Residents of Racine County can bring a valid ID to the game and receive half price admission! Fans, help others this holiday season and bring a canned food item and receive half price admission.
Marquette's game against Gonzaga will also commence a three game homestand over the the Christmas holiday. After its date with the Bulldogs, MU will host Manhattan on Dec. 21, and Navy on Dec. 29, at "The Al." Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. for both contests.
Marquette will look to match a program best ninth consecutive win against GU. Its eight straight wins are a Terri Mitchell era best win streak. Marquette won eight straight last season from Nov. 26-Dec. 30. Prior to that, MU held the same streak in 1999-2000 season. Marquette's longest win streak was during the 1991-92 season when it won nine straight.
In its last time out, Marquette downed Oakland, 64-51, to win its eighth straight game, improve to 9-1 overall, and most notably give head coach Terri Mitchell her 200th career win. Ellis led all scorers with 17 points and Marquette played suffocating defense in a 64-51 victory over Oakland on last Saturday. Marquette held the Golden Grizzlies to 31-percent from the floor and outrebounded them 49-29.
Marquette has outscored its opponents by an average of 11.4 ppg and has owned a +8.1 rebounding margin over its foes this season. The Golden Eagles have out-rebounded its last eight opponents and is 9-0 on the season when winning the battle on the boards.
Gonzaga's date with Marquette will be GU's second road game in three days. The Bulldogs (7-5, 0-0 WCC) play at Washington on Friday before heading to Milwaukee. In its last time out, GU needed overtime to defeat Eastern Washington, 103-102. Senior guard Rachel Kane was the Bulldogs' savor converting all six attempts at the free throw line in overtime.
Fellow classmate Stephanie Hawk leads the Bulldogs with 14.0 ppg and has contributed 6.3 boards, however, overall Gonzaga has been outscored by its opponents, 70.1-69.8, and its foes have manage to average a 1.4 rebounding margin over GU. The Bulldogs are 1-3 this season against ranked opponents. Gonzaga's meeting with Marquette will mark the fifth opponent ranked in the top-25 the Bulldogs have played this season.
Sunday's game is the first meeting between the two Jesuit schools.
