The Marquette men's tennis team defeated Southern Illinois, 5-2, today at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium, extending their winning streak to five matches. There record is now 5-1 in dual match season.
Brett Binkley and Ricky Servoss got the quick win at no. 3 doubles, beating the Saluki's duo of Tomas Gonzalez and Bojan Ilievski, 8-5.
"It was nice to get the doubles win at no.3 because it gave us a quick start," head coach Steve Rodecap said.
Stephen Shao and Trent Hagan teamed up at no.2 to take down Rodrigo Lama and Felipe Villasenor, 8-6. The duo is now 4-1 on the spring season.
Eigintas Vedrickas and Ian Kawas were the only Golden Eagles unable to come up with a doubles victory. They fell to Sergio Sanchez and Felipe Villasenor, 8-6.
Vedrickas came back in singles to beat SIU's Lama, 6-1, 7-5.
"Eigis did a good job of getting the victory and getting off the court quickly," Rodecap said. "It makes it easier on the other players and relaxes them when we get that early two point lead."
Binkley gave Marquette a 3-0 lead, when he beat Bubnov at no. 4, 6-4, 6-2. The Golden Eagles needed only one more victory to take the match.
Kawas dropped the first set at no.2, came back to win the second and force a third. He was not able to closeout the match falling to Sanchez, 6-4, 6-7(7), 6-3.
"I thought the turning point of today was when Ian forced a third set," said Rodecap. "It gave our guys momentum."
Stephen Shao and Greg Sirtoek clenched the final wins for Marquette winning at no. 5 and no. 6. Sirtoek is 4-0 at singles in the spring season.
"The guys were feisty today and found a way to win," Rodecap said. "The sign of a good team is being able to make adjustments and find a way to come away on top."
The men will be back in action on Tuesday night at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium when they take on their first Big East opponent, DePaul, at 4 p.m.
