Volleyball Loses to Western Michigan, 3-0

MILWAUKEE - Despite 15 kills from junior Jamie Mueller, Marquette fell to Western Michigan in the second match of the Marquette Battle for the Bird, 3-0 (30-27, 30-24, 30-27). With the loss, Marquette falls to 16-13, while Western Michigan improves to 19-9.
Senior outside hitter Theresa Coughlin also recorded a double figure mark in kills with 12. Abby Gephart led the Broncos with 12 kills. Setter Jenifer Sulewski had 37 assists in leading the Broncos to the win.
Marquette lost the first game of the match, 30-27. The Golden Eagles kept pace on the attack, recording 18 kills to the Broncos' 19, but Western Michigan was able to claim the game. Trailing most of the early going, Marquette clawed back to even the score at 20-20, but Western Michigan pulled away thanks to kills by Shaylen Jackson, who had four in the game. me. Marquette struggled with its accuracy in the second game, hitting only 9.8 percent. MU was competitive with 14 kills as opposed to the Broncos' 15, but 10 attack errors caused of the Golden Eagles their struggles. Despite the woes, MU led as late as 19-18, but the Broncos closed out the game behind Sulewski, who had four kills in the game.
The Golden Eagles dominated the third game early, taking a three point lead at 17-14. Western Michigan stormed back at that point to tie the game at 17 and didn't trail for the rest of the match. Again, Marquette struggled with consistency, hitting 10.6 percent, despite matching Western Michigan with 16 kills for the game. Western Michigan hit 27.2 percent for the match compared to MU's 15.4 percent.
In earlier action in the tournament, Valparaiso defeated Fairfield in three straight, 30-23, 30-23, 31-29. Lauren Moulton had 17 kills to lead Valparaiso.
In the final day of the tournament, Western Michigan takes on Fairfield at 4 p.m. Marquette concludes its season taking on Valparaiso at 7 p.m.
